Definition of Term

biological oxygen demand
(English) The amount of dissolved oxygen consumed by microorganisms as they decompose organic material in polluted water. Measurement of the rate of oxygen take-up is used as a standard test to detect the polluting capacity of effluent; the greater the BOD value (g) (and hence the greater the presence of oxygen - consuming microorganisms) the greater the volume of pollutant present. (See also: metabolism, microorganisms, pollution)
(See also: metabolism, microorganisms, pollution)
(See also: metabolism, microorganisms, pollution)
