Definition of Term

fathom
(english) The unit of depth in the ocean for countries using the Imperial system of units. One fathom is equal to 6 feet or 1.83 meters. Also sometimes used in expressing horizontal distances, in which case 120 fathoms make one cable or very nearly one-tenth of a nautical mile (about 180 m). (See also: depth, nautical mile)
