Sprawling, irregular masses of interconnected blunt ridges with slightly elevated oscules on top. Color: brownish to purplish, purple violet. Morphology: encrusting, massive or tubes. Soft consistency. May exudate purple ink if collected.
Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge (Ref. 833).
