Definition of Term

winterkill
(English) The death of fishes in enclosed water bodies during winter owing to oxygen depletion. Snow and ice cover prevent oxygen exchange through the water surface and the breakdown of organic matter on the bed of the pond and in the water column also uses up the oxygen.
