Description Continental sea surrounded by the Vancouder Island, southern continental British Columbia, and the Olympic Peninsula. Total number of islands: 419. Total land area of islands: 3,660 square kilometers. Coastline length, including islands: 7,470 km. The 3 major bodies of water (subarea, first level division) are the Strait of Georgia, the Juan de Fuca Strait, and the Puget Sound. The Haro strait is not listed as a subareas in published defintions of Salish Sea. It is split between the Juan de Fuca Strait for its southern part and the Strait of Georgia for its northern part. Number of different marine animals species estimated: 20 species of mammals, 128 species of birds, 219 species of fish, and over 3000 species of invertebrates (Brown and Gaydos, 2007). Number of species listed as threatened, endangered or are candidates for listing: 64 (Brown and Gaydos, 2007).
Comments on faunal list The list was assembled mainly from Hart (1973: Pacific fishes of Canada; Ref. 6885). Some additions were taken from McAllister (1990: A list of the fishes of Canada; Ref. 11980) and Favaro et al. (2010: Ref. 91783), and other primary literature. The coastal fishes were checked against Lamb & Edgell (2010: Coastal fishes of the Pacific Northwest; Ref. 94401).
