Volcanic eruptions formed the archipelago of 13 islands. The rich volcanic soil and mild temperatures allow a wide range of vegetation to grow. Severe droughts are common, so the land is artificially irrigated. From sea level to about 400 meters the vegetation is typical of North Africa and includes date palm, dragon tree, and cactus. At this elevation bananas, figs, and wine grapes are grown on the irrigated land. Eucalyptus, pine, and flowering plants grow at the higher and cooler elevations. संदर्भ Microsoft, 1996 |
