						Carapace distinctly transversely ovate, swollen, surfaces smooth; orbits relatively small, eyes slanted obliquely in adults; third maxilliped without any flagellum on exopod.  Color:  purple brown to purple and reddish purple.					
				
				
						
			
			
			
			
				
					Fully terrestrial, can be found many kilometers away from the sea.  Inhabits shallow burrows or under trees and rocks in undisturbed forests in isolated islands, where they may be very common.  Larvae is released into sea, which return to land upon completion of their development.  Occasionally collected for food (Ref. 343).

					Members of the order Decapoda are mostly gonochoric.  Mating behavior:  Precopulatory courtship ritual is common (through olfactory and tactile cues); usually indirect sperm transfer.
