It has lengths of 35 cm, maximum total body length; 17 cm, carapace length; 10 cm, average carapace length (Ref. 4). Maximum depth from Ref. 106915. Inhabits deep waters (Ref. 106915). Occurs at depths from 0 to 400 m, usually between 180 and 324 m. Off South Africa it is usually found on muddy or sandy substrate, sometimes with coral fragments; off Madagascar it has been reported from a rocky substrate (Ref. 4). Also on organically rich muddy substrata with coral fragments and sand (Ref. 106915). The species is gregarious and seems to migrate, it can sometimes be caught in enormous numbers (Ref.4 ).

Members of the order Decapoda are mostly gonochoric. Mating behavior: Precopulatory courtship ritual is common (through olfactory and tactile cues); usually indirect sperm transfer.
