Definition of Term

incidental catch
(English) Species taken incidentally in a fishery; bycatch species may be of lesser value than the target species, and are often discarded. Some bycatch species are of commercial value and are retained for sale. Bycatch often consists of the juveniles of commercial species, and their loss has a deliterious impact on the overall yield obtained from a certain area. (See also: bycatch, discard, fishery)

(French) Espèce prise accidentellement dans une pêche ; les espèces des prises accessoires peuvent être de valeur moindre que l'espèce-cible, et sont souvent délaissées. Quelques espèces des prises accessoires ont une valeur marchande et sont donc conservées. (See also: bycatch, discard, fishery)

(Portuguese) Espécies capturadas acidentalmente numa pescaria; estas espécies podem ter pouco valor e são rejeitadas. Outras têem valor comercial e são guardadas para venda.
